Commander Amsler and Other Members of the Department attend the 82nd Annual Conference of the Central Region Association of the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic on October 1. Brother PC-in-C Ed Krieser is the new Commander of the Association.
Held in Lansing, MI in an old GAR Hall Museum, the host was Grant Camp member SUVCW PC-in-C James Pahl. Also in attendance from Missouri were PC-in-C Ed Krieser, PC-in-C Donald Palmer, PDC Walt Busch, DC Robert Amsler, Jr., Grant Camp SVC Craig Mathews and his wife Andrea. The conference is a part of on-going learning conferences that is open to all members of the SUVCW, DUVCW, WRC, LGAR, and A-SUVCW from various states throughout the Midwest and Southern Central States. The organization has been holding the conference since 1940. Held the first Saturday in October of every year, this year we were stationed in Lansing, MI. Starting on Friday night, we had several meals sampling the local cuisine. On Saturday we went to a nearby GAR Hall Museum in Eaton Rapids that several members of the SUVCW help run. We heard a brief talk about the Michigan Preserving the Civil War Flags project at their Capital and then had a brief meeting. The real purpose of the event each year is for members of all the Allied Orders to visit with each other, discuss problems and possible solutions. This year it was discussed over homemade ice cream on Saturday evening. |
Our department has had several commanders of the organization since 1940. Our last one was PDC Sumner Hunnewell, two years ago. In 2022-2023 we once again have a brother of our department as commander; Brother PC-in-C Ed Krieser of Phelps Camp. And the next two meeting locations have been approved as being held. 2023 is in Dayton, OH and we will be visiting the Air Force Museum. In 2024, the Conference will be held in the area of Ferdinand, IN and the Lincoln Boyhood Home will be visited. Plan to attend now! Check out http://www.alliedorderscra.org/ for upcoming information.

Funding from both the German community and Civil War groups to fund the repairs to the monument and the markers.

FOR THE CHILDREN: America needs a good 12¢ Patriotic Comic.
These comic books were produced by the School and College Service division of the Association of American Railroads in 1959 & 1960. The cover art is by Bill Bunce. An interesting promotional comic covering railroad history during the Civil War. These pdfs can be downloaded and printed out on regular paper. Their actual size is standard 7x10 comic size, 16-pages, full color, newsprint cover and interior. No copyright is found on the books. This comic book and others like the Classics Illustrated series encouraged many a child in the 1950's and 60's to read, taught good citizenship, ethics, and inspired imagination before comics became more violent and overpriced. [No copyright was found on these books. They are presented for educational purposes.] |

The Sons...
In 1881 the GAR formed the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV) to carry on its traditions and memory long after the GAR had ceased to exist. Membership was open to any man who could prove ancestry to a member of the GAR or to a veteran eligible for membership in the GAR. In later years, men who did not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary membership, but who demonstrated a genuine interest in the Civil War and could subscribe to the purpose and objectives of the SUVCW, were admitted as Associates. This practice continues today.
Many GAR Posts sponsored Camps of the SV. In 1925 the SV name was changed to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), under which its federal charter was issued in 1954. The SUVCW is legally recognized as the heir to, and representative of, the GAR.
Today, the National Organization of the SUVCW, headed by an annually elected Commander-in-Chief, oversees the operation of 26 Departments, each consisting of one or more states, a Department-at-Large, a National Membership-at-Large, and over 200 community based Camps. More than 6,360 men enjoy the benefits of membership in the only male organization dedicated to the principles of the GAR -- Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty. It publishes "The BANNER" quarterly for its members. The SUVCW National Headquarters is located in the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The SUVCW is one of five Allied Orders of the GAR. The other four Orders are: Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
